The city of Lisbon is full with charming streets, picturesque buildings, cultural heritage and unforgettable neighborhoods.
Each neighborhood and street in Lisbon have a different story to tell. Because of that, we put together a list of our favorite neighborhoods in Lisbon to ensure that you take the most out of your visit.
Number 1: Alfama
Alfama is considered Lisbon most charming and historic area. This is definitely the place to visit if you are looking for a traditional Portuguese meal accompanied by fado music. This area is full of narrow streets, alleys and staircases. The streets are filled with souvenir shops, fado bars and Portuguese restaurants.
Number 2: Graca and Sao Vicente
Like Alfama, Graca is also famous by its tiny streets that barely allow one person to walk. Here you will find amazing views of the Tejo river. Head to Miradouro da Graca and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte for the perfect picture of Lisbon. If you are an enthusiast of monuments, your visit to this area is not complete without visiting the National Patheon, the Sao Vicente de fora Monastery and the Sao Jorge Castle.
We definitely recommend a stroll around the Sao Jorge Castle where you will be surprised with little streets filled with shops and some restaurants. If it is a Saturday, don’t miss out Feira da Ladra which is the famous outdoor flea market located near the National Pantheon.
Number 3: Bairro Alto
Our choice number 3 goes to Bairro Alto. Don’t miss out on a stroll around this neighborhood specially on a Friday or Saturday evening which is filled with bars, restaurants and its unconventional vibe makes it such a special place
.
Number 4: Baixa and Rossio
Here you will find the friendliest touristic neighborhood in Lisbon – Baixa and Rossio and its located only 4 metro stops from Hotel Luena. This zone is considered the real downtown of the city and you will find international shops, trendy restaurants, boutique cafes and monuments. Interesting fact that this area was totally destroyed during the earthquake of 1755 ad fully rebuilt by Marques de Pombal in the late 18th century. Our favorite spots in this area include Praça do Comércio, Brasileira Café, Praca Luis de Camoes, Santa Justa Lift and Armazens do Chiado.
Number 5: Avenida da Liberdade
If you are a fan of international brands, Avenida the Liberdade is where you should go. Here you will find names like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Armani and Burberry. However, if you are just looking for a nice stroll around, the Liberty Avenue is a wide road lined with trees linking downtown Lisbon with the northern area. Other suggestions in this avenue is the Parque Eduardo VII, Marques de Pombal Square and Hard Rock Café.
Number 6: Cais do Sodre
Cais do Sodre is more than just a cool neighborhood in Lisbon. For visitors, like Bairro Alto is the perfect place to go for a drink in the trendy Pink Street. If you feel like eating, make a stop at Time Out Market or as we Portuguese called it, Mercado da Ribeira.
Moreover is in Cais do Sodre that you will fInd the ferry if you would like to cross the Tejo river to visit the Sanctuary of Christ the King located in Almada or the train for a day trip to Cascais or Estoril.
